Choline Citrate

Choline citrate is yet another supplement form of choline, an essential nutrient that is similar to the B-Complex group of vitamins. This supplement form is one of the less expensive choline supplements available, much cheaper than CDP-choline and Alpha GPC. Choline is a precursor of acetylcholine, an important neurotransmitter in the brain believed to be responsible for most of the brain’s cognitive processes. Supplementing with choline is thus prescribed as a therapy and even treatment for a variety of neurological conditions.

Being an acetylcholine booster, choline supplementation generally believed to enhance the cognitive processes of the brain. It is almost a rule among experienced and long time users of cognitive enhancement supplements to include choline into their nootropic stacks to complement racetams, which rely on acetylcholine activity for its nootropic effects.

CHOLINE-CITRATE

For cognitive enhancement, choline citrate is very rarely taken on its own. However, there are a good number of nootropic stacks that mixes choline citrate into their blend. Just like choline bitartrate, choline citrate is not as effective as other supplements that have concentrated amounts of choline like Alpha GPC and CDP-choline. If you are trying to build a stack on a limited budget however, choline citrate will do as your stack’s choline source.

Choline supplementation is also popular among athletes, especially those who participate in endurance sports like marathons, triathlons, and Nordic skiing. Studies show that at certain points during competition, the choline levels of endurance athletes drop drastically, which increases their sensitivity to pain and fatigue. Studies suggest that supplementing with choline while training helps to improve the performance of endurance athletes.

It is without question that choline is very effective in increasing the levels of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine in the system. This same neurotransmitter is responsible for memory retention, logical reasoning, mental focus, sensory perception, and verbal fluency. Racetams work by making these neurotransmitter work overtime, which means that more of it will be needed in order for the racetams to be effective. Insufficient acetylcholine while supplementing with racetams for cognitive enhancement is the cause of some of its side effects, particularly the headaches and dizziness.

Supplementing with choline citrate complements the nootropic effects of the racetams. Not only does choline citrate have the ability to increase the levels of acetylcholine in the body, it likewise does a good job at keeping the brain’s acetylcholine stores high.

The problem with supplementing with choline citrate is that it contains only about 50% choline. Taken orally, the supplement undergoes several processes before it reaches and crosses the blood-brain barrier. Throughout this processes, the quality of the choline is being degraded that by the time it reaches the brain, only a portion of the choline remains. This is an area where concentrated choline preparations easily trump choline citrate.

Choline citrate is also known as having a fishy odor and users have experienced this distinctive fishy smell emanate from their body while taking the supplement.  Choline citrate is also notorious for causing GI related problems like diarrhea, gastrointestinal distress, heartburn, and vomiting. Other side effects include lightheadedness and nausea.

CONS

  1. It may not work as well as Alpha GPC and CDP choline.
  2. You may need to take more of it to achieve the desired effect.
  3. It has an unpleasant odor.
  4. It has unpleasant side-effects.

Choline citrate is not as easily absorbed as the other more expensive choline supplements so you may need to take between 600 to 3,000mg, divided into three doses daily. Being a fat soluble supplement, it is best taken with meals.
